OPERATION LAYOUT
THINK IN CUBIC FT RATHER THAN SQUARE FT.
Hodge recommends designing your warehouse around space utilization before investing in material handling equipment, and thinking in cubic footage rather than square footage.
Why?
Logistics managers commonly overlook the option of building upward to take advantage of space available at greater heights, or choose a layout based on the limitations of an existing equipment fleet.
CAPACITY
KNOW THE VARIABLE WEIGHT OF THE LOAD
Before you chose a forklift, you should know the range of weight and dimensions of the different loads this lift will handle.
WHY?
Determining the necessary maximum lift capacity involves many factors such as lifting height, load center, and truck maintenance that can potentially diminish the capacity of a lift.
FUEL TYPE
ELECTRIC VS. INTERNAL COMBUSTION
Forklifts are available as either electric, or internal combustion. Electric forklifts are powered by a large battery, where internal combustion forklifts operate using fuel.
WHY?
While internal combustion forklifts offer quick refueling, initially lower costs, and typically higher capacity, electric models can be quieter, safer for indoor operations, and offer lower cost per hour.
INDOOR/OUTDOOR USAGE
WHERE WILL THE FORKLIFT BE OPERATED?
You'll want to know whether your lift will be used completely indoors, outdoors, or both, before you chose a forklift.
WHY?
Some forklifts operate low to the ground which can be a challenge for outdoor applications, while others have higher clearance to make up for debris and uneven surfaces.
